celebrating 40 years of Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Nebraska’

On top of the world in 1982, Bruce Springsteen began writing demos for what would become his sixth album, 'Nebraska'. The song cycle – more subdued than previous albums – focused on small people in small places, trying to make sense of their lives and find a way through. When he had his 4-track demos completed, Springsteen realized he hadn't made things to be fleshed out by his E. Street Band; instead, he had made his album already. It's nearly impossible to overstate the impact of Nebraska: not only is it one of Springsteen's most beloved albums, it also basically invented lo-fi recordings, meaning that every time someone has sat with an acoustic guitar and a 4-track recorder in the four decades since and made an album, they owe some debt to Bruce. We're honored to present the album for its 40th Anniversary.

Float On: Mariah Carey’s ‘Butterfly’ Turns 25

To make Butterfly, Mariah Carey had to dismiss what fans previously expected from her. It meant shedding traditional pop ballads for urban adult contemporary and a harder hip-hop edge. Trading her dark-hued ringlets for a glamorous blonde blowout. Wearing thigh-baring gowns instead of conventional high-waisted jeans. Filing for divorce from music executive Tommy Mottola. By 1997, Mariah had broken all the rules to revamp her career on her sixth album, flying her into genre-defying heights.
