After leaving the Kalapana band in the 1970s, Mackey Feary set out to thrive on his own, leading to the formation of the Mackey Feary Band and their self-titled debut album in 1978. Feary brought together significant artists of the time, assembling Nohelani Cypriano, Azure McCall, Jimmy Funai and Gaylord Holomalia to take on the task of recording the band’s first album. Mackey Feary Band fuses the sounds of Hawaiian jazz, soul and rock, seamlessly including low-tempo songs with energetic offerings like the unrestrained 7-minute version of “Powerslide.”
