Yogetsu Akasaka–a beatboxing Buddhist monk and handpan player from Japan–makes music that is focused on the eternal here and now. His music asks for you to slow down, relax, and settle into the waves he creates. Centered around the kōan that you’re never in the same river twice, his swirling, headtrip beats are created live, in real time, improvisation providing the way forward.
He briefly went viral during COVID for one of his meditations on YouTube, but he’d never made an album or put out anything physical until we asked. The result is Sacred Ceremony, an album made to the lengths of vinyl sides, two 22-ish minute suites Akasaka made especially for this Vinyl Me, Please release.
