Like many jazz musicians of his era, Joe Henderson fostered his talent at a young age, slowly accruing accolades and hitting significant milestones. In high school, he was already composing for his school’s band. Not long afterward, he jumped from his high school stage to the stages of Detroit. Enlisting in the U.S. Army, Henderson embarked on a world tour, playing for soldiers across the globe. In 1964, Henderson joined pianist Horace Silver as part of a quintet on the latter’s iconic album Song For My Father, where Henderson provided an awe-inspiring solo for the titular song, quickly launching him into fame.
