For years, our members have asked for more metal in our Records of the Month and Anthology selections. Well, we’ve heard you, and are here to deliver. Later this spring, VMP will be shipping VMP Anthology 9: The Story of Metal Blade, an 8-album, 10-LP set that tells the story of one of the most transformative metal labels of all time, and the artists who changed metal along with it. The Metal Blade Anthology is available for purchase here now, and you can read more below to get more info on what’s included in this Anthology.
VMP curated this set alongside Metal Blade founder Brian Slagel, who picked these eight albums to chart the evolution of Metal Blade and metal itself. The box starts with one of the first albums released on the label, Omen’s Warning of Danger, and continues with another release from 1985, Fates Warning’s The Spectre Within. From there, the box jumps to 1991, with GWAR’s America Must Be Destroyed and Cannibal Corpse’s legendary Butchered at Birth, before rounding out the ’90s with King Diamond’s Voodoo. From there, the box moves into the ’00s evolution of metalcore, with releases from The Black Dahlia Murder (Miasma), Amon Amarth (Twilight of the Thunder God) and Armored Saint (La Raza). All eight albums have been lacquered from high-quality digital sources by Barry Grint at AIR and pressed on 180g splatter vinyl.
A vital part of the Anthology series is the storytelling, and we’ve got this one covered, thanks to our pals at Revolver Magazine. This box comes with a liner notes booklet featuring archival photos and words from metal writer J. Bennett. Additionally, there will be an accompanying five-episode podcast, also hosted by Bennett, that features interviews with Slagel and the bands featured in this edition of Anthology. We can’t wait for you to not only own these albums, but appreciate them on a deeper level. You can grab it here.
