One of the many tactile joys of collecting vinyl is the satisfaction of slicing open a new record. So much so that it’s traditional for record aficionados to keep a blade of some kind near their turntable specifically for this purpose. That’s why we partnered with our friends at The James Brand to create a new tool for that ritual. The Abbey is a simple fix-blade knife made from a highly corrosion resistant stainless steel, featuring a real vinyl LP inlay made from recycled VMP records and housed in a leather sheath. While explicitly designed with record collectors in mind, it’s good for all kinds of quick work.
“We wanted a simple, clean, and approachable design for the Abbey, a blade that has a single purpose: for vinyl lovers to open the cellophane on a brand new record,” the design team at The James Brand shared. “The leather sheath was a perfect companion to the blade, and it becomes a home when it’s not in use. Hang it on the wall with the lanyard loop, or sit it next to your turntable; The Abbey becomes equal parts functional tool and conversation piece.”
Each recycled VMP record provided enough for 20 knife inlays, which were CNC cut on precision machines and secured to the blade. The leather sheath in which the blade is safely housed reads “Lost Sounds Found,” encouraging you to slice open a new record and explore a new sonic journey with every use.
