Medeski, Martin & Wood formed in 1991 at the now-closed Village Gate in New York. John Medeski, Billy Martin and Chris Wood had frequently bumped into one another for years, but it was finally time for jazz to welcome a new name. MMW slowly began to explore various sounds in their music, taking inspiration from hip-hop and alternating between their choice of instruments. As the years flew forward, the trio signed with the iconic jazz label, Blue Note Records.
MMW released Uninvisible as their third studio album on Blue Note Records. The 2002 album heavily leans into hip-hop while also remaining untethered by genre as the musicians utilized electronic elements, fully finding freedom in their unconventional playing style.
