Medeski, Martin & Wood formed in 1991 at the now-closed Village Gate in New York. John Medeski, Billy Martin and Chris Wood had frequently bumped into one another for years, but it was finally time for jazz to welcome a new name. MMW slowly began to explore various sounds in their music, taking inspiration from hip-hop and alternating between their choice of instruments. As the years flew forward, the trio signed with the iconic jazz label, Blue Note Records.
In 2000, the three tapped a number of other musicians for the release of their sophomore album, The Dropper, on Blue Note Records. The album topped at No. 2 on the Billboard Jazz Albums chart during its initial release. The album features a frenzied performance by each artist, bursting with welcomed mayhem.
