Growing up in a religious household, Haley Heynderickx had always tried to grapple with the idea of what God was like. As she got older, she entertained the possibility that God could be like “a busy mother trying to balance the chaos all around her”. In her debut album, I Need to Start a Garden, Heynderickx lets herself wonder further about this personification of God. Her lyrics attribute mortal qualities to the divine, imagining God having knockoff bags, thick hips, and the ability to speak many languages. Heynderickx carries a spirit of both thoughtfulness and even humor in her lyrics; they flutter from her mouth, except for the occasional instance where she practically rips out the words deep within. I Need to Start a Garden is self-aware, wise, and just plain lovely. Available in tiger’s eye vinyl.
