Ten years ago, Courtney Barnett went from an unknown guitarist in garage rock bands in Melbourne to a veritable festival headliner, one of our few rock gods left. How did that happen? You can consider her own personal Big Bang as The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas, a collection of her first two solo releases that launched her from Australia to the world. Brimming with shaggy, jangly, indie-rock fuzz and songs about wishing you stayed in bed while also worrying your life is passing you by (“Avant Gardner”), and tracks that feel like splatter run-on sentence poetry (“History Eraser”), it was the perfect introduction to all of Barnett’s charms.
