Following the passing of his sibling to COVID-19, Charlie Gabriel put down his horn for the first time ever, instead spending his days in reflection with regular chess matches in Preservation Hall Band member Ben Jaffe's studio kitchen. During one afternoon, Joshua Starkman joined in a corner, playing his guitar. The following day, Gabriel returned with his saxophone, marking it as the first session for Eighty Nine and played almost entirely among Gabriel, Jaffe and Starkman while recorded by Matt Aguiluz in Jaffe's kitchen.
This new album includes six standards and three new songs written by Gabriel, and three new songs in which he sings. It also features him playing on the clarinet, the first instrument he had learned.
The VMP exclusive edition of this Charlie Gabriel's Eighty Nine is pressed on 1LP Clear Purple vinyl and will arrive in a single direct-to-board, foil stamped and numbered jacket. It's mastered at Sterling Sound by Greg Calbi.
