If you haven’t heard of this game, you might need to stop blasting your tunes on those in-ear headphones and see a doctor. Imagine if Team Fortress came out today with new tech advancements, some magic and MOBA additions, and four times as much variety: that (very simply put) is the gist of Overwatch. Overwatch is Blizzard’s first new original IP in almost two decades and is their attempt at jumping into the eSports ring. There are 21 playable characters belonging to 4 different classes: offense, defense, tank, and support. Each class has their advantages and disadvantages depending on the current objective, and each character has their own abilities (including one powerful ultimate ability). Depending on your own personal preference, you may tend to latch onto only a few characters, but don’t be afraid to switch it up now and then because some characters might take longer to get a handle on and could become your new favorite.
With the overwhelming amount of possibilities in Overwatch, one thing that may grow dull pretty quickly is the music. Luckily, technology is beautiful and has given us ways to fix this problem by streaming our own ass-kicking playlist. Overwatch is fast-paced, cartoony, explosive, strategic, competitive, fun, and creative. The music attached to it should contain all of the same qualities to help contribute to the immersive experience. Fast-paced is self-explanatory. Cartoony could be translated as never being too serious though still capable of strong emotions. Explosive could be expressed with distortion, huge reverb, volume, or anything that throws you back in your seat. Strategic could mean structured. Competitive could be evoked by music that gets blood pumping. Fun could be achieved with major keys and upbeat rhythms. Creativity could be heard in bands that challenge the boundaries of a genre. The following playlist was my attempt at throwing all of those qualities together. Enjoy and happy hunting, heroes.
