When Alicia Keys debuted with Songs in A Minor in 2001, it was clear from the jump that she was a ground-breaking talent, destined to be a household name and make waves in contemporary R&B, soul and pop. While she was only 20 at the time, she had a staggering 16 years of piano and performance under her belt, and her debut went on to sell over 6.2 million copies and win five Grammys.

With songs like “Fallin’” and “A Woman’s Worth” being played out of countless radios and car windows across the globe, all eyes were on the New York-born artist to see where the next move of this budding star would take her. Even amongst the building pressure, Keys rose to the occasion and delivered on all the artistic growth she’d promised early on and more. In 2003, Keys delivered another masterpiece — this one building on the last to create a work even more nuanced, mature, yet bold: The Diary of Alicia Keys.

Today, for the first time since its original release 17 years ago, VMP is reissuing this spectacular 15-track milestone in Keys’ career and modern R&B alike on exclusive 2LP Oak and Ivory Cornetto color vinyl. From popular, timeless hits like “Karma” and “If I Ain’t Got You” to flirty jams like “You Don’t Know My Name” to funky anthems like “Heartburn,” The Diary of Alicia Keys is an earnest embodiment of the sage advice Keys shared with Rolling Stone upon the release of the album: “A brother by the name of Van Hunt, who is one of the most incredible musicians I know, said to me, “Alicia, all you need is three chords and the truth.” It changed my mind on how to write and play and everything. It changed my life.”

The Diary of Alicia Keys was produced primarly by Keys herself (with contributions from Kanye West and Kerry Brothers Jr.), debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 charts, and went on to win three Grammys and sell over 8 million copies.
