From Mark Linkous’s world rises a tender garden, where snaking vines and knotted trees cradle troves of wild beings. The Virginia-born songwriter often spoke through real and imagined animals, from horses and crows to skinny wolves. It was only natural for someone raised with a slow and rural disposition, an open-ended Southern drawl, and a spirit that preferred lush terrain to the confines of his body. Linkous wasn’t one for the music world, but one for his world of music.
Linkous would have wanted all of us to commune with his work on our turntables in our quiet corners, to revel in the depth of sound, and the creaks and crackles and pops that come with the analog experience. To gamble on these old time machines. His death at age 47 was tragic. But each time I space out in the natural world, or thrift some castoff treasure, I am reminded of the extraordinary landscapes he conceived from such everyday things. I am hopeful in the promise of his private mind garden, where we are awed by even the smallest creatures, and by love and real and tender sadness.
