When we interviewed Lukas Nelson and the Promise of the Real about their 2019 album Turn Off the News (Build a Garden), when asked what their favorite Willie Nelson album is, they all answered, Naked Willie, a 2009 collection of '60s and '70s Nelson recordings that show songs in formation, stripped down to their essence, and often visible with their blemishes intact. So it's no surprise that the band has done their own homage with Naked Garden, an album that takes Turn Off the News session and turns them into a well of new material, from songs that have their pre-and post-studio talkback present to b-sides and alternate takes. It's an album that shows the considerable studio craft that went into Turn Off the News and is a stunning album in its own right.
