The pianist and composer Horace Tapscott is one of the biggest what-ifs in jazz history; he hated record labels, and devoted most of his time to the live fervor of performances. A blender of pan-African music and free and spiritual jazz, he started performing and composing in the early '60s, and by the late '60s, had finally been convinced to record his debut, later called The Giant Is Awakened. A stunning, mammoth achievement, he hated the process so much, he didn't make another album for almost 10 years. This release, originally on Flying Dutchman, has never been reissued until now, and sells for hundreds on Discogs, because to know this record is to want to live and explore in its environs.
