Did you know that Club Space, Miami's legendary nightlife venue, has been shaping the electronic music landscape for a quarter-century? Established in 2000, Club Space has witnessed the evolution of the dance music scene firsthand, paving the way for countless artists and resonating with fans from around the globe. As Miami Music Week 2025 descends upon the city, Club Space embraces its 25-year legacy by launching a week-long celebration of music, memories, and community spirit. Through the voices of past and present owners, employees, and patrons, we delve into the vibrant history of this iconic establishment.
Luis Puig, well-versed in Miami's vibrant nightlife scene, embarked on a journey to create a venue that would redefine the clubbing experience. His inspiration drew upon his travels and experiences in globally recognized nightclubs. Puig recalls his transformative visit to Ibiza as a pivotal moment that influenced his vision for Club Space: "I was 21 years old and said, 'Wow, this is something else. The clubs didn’t close; they just stayed open.'” This vision was not realized without its challenges, particularly the need to revamp city regulations regarding nightlife licensing to allow for 24-hour operations.
Recognizing the burgeoning demand for after-hours venues, Puig sought to create a club specifically designed for those wanting to continue their revelry when other establishments closed. "Nightclubs are like the seed to start entertainment districts," he reflected. The formation of a 24-hour entertainment district required extensive lobbying and collaboration with city officials—a challenge Puig undertook to ensure the club's success.
Construction began on a run-down building in Miami’s Park West neighborhood, an endeavor Puig pursued almost single-handedly. His passion and determination led him to sell personal assets to fund the project, ultimately launching Club Space on March 24, 2000, during Miami Music Week.
The opening night, featuring the renowned DJ Danny Tenaglia, set the tone for what was to come—an electrifying, continuous party that changed nightlife in Miami. "Overnight, everybody started talking about this crazy club that didn’t shut down," Puig recalls, reflecting on the buzz surrounding the club's debut.
Initially, Club Space featured a variety of rooms, each dedicated to different musical genres. The Red Room and Blue Room catered to house and trance, respectively, while the emergence of a hip-hop room created a welcoming space for a diverse array of club-goers. This strategic hybrid environment fostered inclusivity, drawing in patrons who might otherwise feel excluded from Miami's nightlife.
A defining feature of Club Space is its Terrace, an open-air space allowing guests to dance as the sun rises. Initially exposed to the elements, the Terrace earned a reputation for its vibrant atmosphere, further solidified through creative marketing ploys like themed parties. One memorable Ibiza-themed celebration even included hay bales and farm animals, designed to entice partygoers to venture outside into the daylight.
As the club continued to flourish, its innovation didn’t stop at music and atmosphere—the owners made substantial investments in infrastructure, including a retractable roof over the Terrace that maintains the outdoor vibe while providing comfort and shelter.
In 2013, after years of personal investment and hard work, Puig sold Club Space to the Opium Group. However, the new direction did not align with Puig's original vision. Frustrated with the establishment's management style—more South Beach than after-hours—Puig reached out to a group he referred to fondly as “the boys": Coloma Kaboomsky, David Sinopoli, and Davide Danese. Their shared passion for Miami’s underground scene and commitment to the venue resounded with Puig’s initial aspirations.
The trio took over in late 2016, initially confronting challenges attributed to the club's declining popularity. Spiritually revitalized, they incorporated community engagement and inclusivity to bring Space back to life.
Recognizing the need for a fresh image, the new owners implemented sweeping changes, including revamped security measures aimed at ensuring safety and comfort for all guests. Their approach emphasized attracting a more diverse crowd and offering a welcoming atmosphere, cementing a reputation as a haven for early-morning party-goers.
Longstanding staff members noted a shift in energy as the ownership transition took root. A new programming direction focused on less mainstream acts, emphasizing underground talent and fostering artistic creativity transformed the club into a vibrant community hub.
A significant focus for the new owners was addressing the need for a safe environment, especially for women. "At the end of the day, guys are going to follow women," Kaboomsky explained. "We can book great DJs, but if we want to build a culture, women need to be safe."
Regular community events, including free yoga classes, provided a unique approach to nightlife that extended beyond traditional club experiences. These initiatives galvanized a loyal community dynamic among patrons, allowing the venue to remain relevant through changing musical trends and cultural shifts.
Club Space's continued relevance peaks during Miami Music Week, a time when electronic music fans, industry professionals, and world-renowned DJs converge in the city. This year’s celebration, coinciding with the venue's 25th anniversary, promises an extravaganza of performances from renowned artists such as The Martinez Brothers, Fisher, and Loco Dice.
The prolonged nature of parties at Club Space allows attendees to fully immerse themselves in the experience. Celebrating artists who contribute to the musical legacy of the club is central to its ethos—an ethos rooted deeply in connection and community.
One of the most cherished moments at Club Space is the sunrise. Both patrons and staff reference the sun's radiant ascent as a transformative experience, often reminiscing about the moment when daylight breaks, signifying the climax of an unforgettable night or a soulful morning dance.
Longtime bartender Sean Ospina reflects on the magical ambiance of sunlit festivities: "The sunrise is the most magical moment we have here."
As Club Space celebrates its 25-year legacy, Puig and the new owners remain steadfast in their commitment to its core values. Maintaining and enhancing the essence of Club Space means upholding the standards and responsibility that come with being a nostalgic highlight of Miami’s nightlife.
Reflecting on the club's success, Puig conveyed, "I know the boys are going to keep it going. I think this thing has legs... Listen, Space is as close to heaven as you’re ever gonna get."
