In May, members of Vinyl Me, Please Rap & Hip Hop will receive an exclusive reissue of Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, the debut LP from legendary Atlanta rap duo OutKast. Our exclusive version of the album is on 2 LPs, meaning the album is here in its entirety on vinyl for the first time ever.
Below, read why we picked Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik and the details of our reissue.
Why And How We Picked This Record
Andrew Winistorfer: I think the reasons why we picked this are pretty obvious: It’s the 25th anniversary of one of the most influential and important rap records of all time. OutKast — along with Dungeon Family and UGK — put southern rap on the map, and without this record, it’s possible nothing that happened in Atlanta since comes to pass. They won Source Awards for this record during the peak of the East Coast-West Coast beef, which led to the famous “The South’s got something to say” line from André 3000. If this record wasn’t as groundbreaking as it was, you maybe don’t get a huge swath of the albums we’ve released in our Rap & Hip Hop subscription. They’d obviously make records that were more famous and sold more copies than this one, but this is where it all began.
Obviously, the most important thing to note here is that this is the first-ever double LP reissue of this album; every previous vinyl version has been single LP, and had to cut skits or songs in order to make the whole album fit. This is the first time this has ever been out completely on vinyl, which is crazy to consider since this is the 25th anniversary. Took this long for the whole thing to be on vinyl.
Alex Berenson, VMP Head of A&R: Totally. This one has similar to our previous Rap & Hip Hop records; was cut DMM at GZ, and sounds really great. It’s on a mirrorboard cover like the Phoenix release this month. We have it on multi-color orange galaxy vinyl.
Another good month putting out records that belong on vinyl on vinyl in the way they should be over here.
