Noname’s debut mixtape Telefone is a spoken-word distillation of the humanity she knows. She strolls you through the allure of her Chicago-- in ice cream on her porch, in Henny in a cup, in their smile, in your own light, in her own light--the beauty that isn’t always granted in the portrayals of her city. She doesn’t let you forget the light she knows exists despite: despite caskets carrying souls left too soon and baby toes she’ll never count and prayers on her tongue that they’ll make it home safe. Telefone occurs in a nighttime that believes in more in the morning and doesn't smother light, but gives it a context to glow: “I hope that darkness keeps you well.”
