Doug Carn's 1972 Spirit of the New Land is the keyboradist and composer's second of four albums released on the Black Jazz label. Spirit of the New Land also marked the first album which his wife, vocalist Jean Carn, contributed to. In addition to featuring Doug Carn's own stellar original compositions in songs like ‘’Arise and Shine'' and ‘’My Spirit,'' the album highlights the Carns' renditions of classics like Miles Davis' ‘’Blue in Green'' and Lee Morgan's ‘’Search for the New Land,'' adding a level of intricacy to the songs through Doug's original lyrics.
