The trio Azymuth were monumental to modernizing Brazilian jazz. Following founding keyboardist José Roberto Betrami's passing in 2012, Alex Malheiros (bass) and Ivan “Mamão” Conti (drums) tapped Kiko Continentinho to continue their legacy. With the three honing their respective unique sounds across musical sessions, it seemed only natural for them to appear on Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad's Jazz Is Dead. Younge commented, “This album is one of the most interesting rides I’ve ever been a part of. In the ‘70s, Azymuth took psychedelic rock, soul, and jazz and made it authentically Brazilian. Together, we’ve pushed this concept even further for a new generation of record collectors.”
