When Smoke Rises is the sonic embodiment of Mustafa’s radical vulnerability and self-awareness. Produced alongside James Blake and Frank Dukes and released under his own imprint Regent Park Songs, the artist’s eight-track debut is an exercise in honesty, as the artist confronts feelings of grief, sorrow and sadness that he still navigates due to the loss and death of loved ones at the hands of gun violence.
The album acts as both an acknowledgment of his journey as well as a stop to reckon what was lost. Many people are familiar with the stylings of his peers who hail from the community like Safe, but through his atmospheric and moody songs, Mustafa is texturizing what sounds are able to come out of the space he calls home.
