Renowned folk artist Jenny Owen Youngs challenged her norms to create a transportive, ambient album that harkens back to her childhood spent growing up in the north Jersey woods. The 12-track album cycles through a 24-hour period, beginning at 7am. Each piece is designed to reflect aspects of the time it's representing, from sunrise to dusk, moonset to blue hour. The earthy, hypnotic project features collaborators Hrishikesh Hirway (host of Song Exploder), Taylor Swift collaborator-John Mark Nelson and Tancred (founding member of Now, Now).
“My family lived in a house tucked way back into the north Jersey woods until I was thirteen. Growing up, I spent a lot of time in the forest hiking, swimming, catching frogs and fish (then letting them go), and identifying the local flora and fauna using a beat-up field guide. Deer were a daily sight, and it wasn’t uncommon for opossums, raccoons, and black bears to find their way into the yard. In the summers, I’d make plaster casts of animal footprints left along the muddy streambank, and fill up on mulberries straight off the tree (also a popular pastime of the aforementioned bears). Even though I left New Jersey to live in Brooklyn, Los Angeles, and eventually Maine, I can’t separate the magical feeling of walking through those woods from my idea of ‘home.’”
