Some voices only come around once in a generation.  Adele Laurie Blue Adkins of Tottenham has one of those voices.  When she releases albums you buy them and listen to them and enjoy them and keep them for your kids.  That’s all we have to say about that.

Praise be. Praise be.

Earl Sweatshirt – I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside (VMP Exclusive)

earl-2

|| Purchase in the Member Store||

There are a lot of things we don’t like either, but the second album from Earl Sweatshirt is not one of them. For his sophomore effort, the Count of Rap feels more comfortable than ever in his own skin as if he’s making this album for him, not you or me. Dark, sometimes very sad, but lyrically sharp as ever, we rejoiced when we were notified the album would be pressed to vinyl and then rejoiced even more when we were able to wrangle the only color variant.

Praise be. Praise be.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard – Paper Mâché Dream Balloon

King Gizzard

||Purchase in Upcoming Member Store 11/16||

It’s rare for an album cover to so perfectly capture the aesthetic produced by the opening notes of the album within, but in this case the magical, deep-kitsch, pastoral scene is spot on.  70’s psych-folk, jazz flute & clarinet all lure you into the album like a fox into the shire. The Australian band’s 7th album and first with American label ATO finds them taking on an all-acoustic repertoire and nailing a delightful groove somewhere between Jethro Tull & Unknown Mortal Orchestra and we don’t know what else to say other than it’s lovely and interesting and will bounce around in your brain repeatedly for a long time.

Frankie Cosmos – Fit Me In EP

Frankie Cosmos

|| Purchase EP Here ||

Fit Me In, a compact and efficient EP portending a more fleshed-out full-band LP in 2016, is an experiment in what Kline’s songwriting would sound like given nearly all electronic instrumentation. A collaboration with frequent musical partner Aaron Maine of Porches, Fit Me In is more in line with Kline’s prolific home recordings than a full indie pop record like Zentropy (opener “Korean Food” appeared first on 2013’s self-released Daddy Cool). Drum machine and synth-heavy, this is true bedroom pop—so intimate as to show the rumpled coverlet and the minute, ancient, nearly unnoticeable stains on the carpet.” – Jes Skolnik, Pitchfork

Oneohtrix Point Never – Garden of Delete

opn

|| VMP Exclusive (LTD to 500) in Upcoming Member Store 11/16 ||

A few months back we got a chance to hear this death star of an album and realized quickly that it wasn’t something one could assess after only one listen.  After 3 listens we assessed that it demanded even more.  We say this not as a knock, but as terms of endearment…the attraction of tackling something you don’t completely understand and reckon you never will is something we seek out.  Challenging albums can often be the result of several factors, but in the case of Garden of Delete, it comes from the denser, darker, aggressive electronic sound that has shattered remnants of EDM, but by no means contains “bangers”.  The grip on what is real noise and what is artificial is completely loosed and your left with a darktronic alien fantasia that feels foreign until that perfect moment on the 6th listen when you realize it’s all too representative of the chaotic present.

Floating Points – Elainea

“Though comparatively short—just seven songs totaling some 43 minutes—Elaenia is rich and welcoming, balancing Shepherd’s intelligence with intuition. Flitting between strange time signatures and simple pulses, it utilizes mostly analog synthesizers, pairing them with live instrumentation: electric bass, guitar, piano, live drums, and strings. It is as warm and fluid an “electronic” album as you will hear all year, and it has a timeless feel: There’s no reason it could not have been written and recorded 10, 20, or even 30 years ago.” – Philip Sherbourne, Pitchfork, 8.4 (Best New Music)

Soldiers of Fortune – Early Risers

sof

|| Purchase Album Here ||

Soldiers of Fortune describes themselves as an “ANTI-BAND” which sounds cool, but vague & confusing. But, when you put together a lineup that includes Brad Truax (Interpol), Kid Millions (Man Forever, Oneida), Barry London (Oneida), Matt Sweeney (Chavez), Jesper Eklow (Endless Boogie), Mike Bones, Papa Crazee (Oneida)……AND vocals from Clark Bronson, Stephen Malkums, Cass McCombs, Dan Melchior, Ethan Miller and Matt McAuley…….yeah, ok, that’s it….so when you put together that group of people the bottom line is you can do whatever the hell you want, call it what you want and not give a damn what anyone thinks.
